When you have Ethical Managers among your friends, the conversation always leads to great ideas.

In an era in which digital technologies, automation and artificial intelligence are rapidly redefining business models, companies often find themselves having to balance efficiency and innovation with an increasingly urgent focus on the human element.

Last week, I had the privilege of hearing once again from a manager whom I consider ethical precisely because of his rigorous but humane approach to leadership and business management, a man with over 25 years of experience in top management and a background ranging from sales to general management, in both national and international contexts.

His words, marked by a deep awareness of the changes underway, reinforce a conviction that, perhaps, today more than ever represents a solid guide: human beings must remain at the heart of the company. This article aims to explore and elaborate on that point of view, drawing inspiration from his thinking to reflect on how companies can build a sustainable and humane future, even amid economic challenges and profound technological transformations.

Human beings: the essential core of the organisation

For this manager, the centrality of human beings is not a nostalgic or moralistic idea, but an essential practical and strategic factor. Technology enhances business capabilities but cannot replace the judgement, creativity, empathy and dialogue that only people can bring in an authentic and irreplaceable way.

In his experience, when an organisation puts people at the centre, it creates a virtuous circle where motivation, productivity and loyalty to the business project feed into each other. Corporate culture, he says, must therefore embrace and value human capital as the primary lever for success.

Dialogue as a leadership tool

When I asked him how he manages internal communication, he replied: "A key value for me is dialogue: not simply as an exchange of information, but as a genuine process of mutual listening. Internal communication is often neglected or reduced to a mere formality in companies, when in fact it is the foundation for building trust and a sense of belonging. Dialogue must be built professionally: structured meetings, regular discussions, clear and transparent language."

In my opinion, a manager who wants to communicate internally with humanity must above all remember that they are not a “confessor” and must never adopt a paternalistic attitude. They must be strict, attentive to compliance with the rules, but never rigidly authoritarian or distant. They are leaders who believe in fairness and clarity, and in people's ability to contribute independently and responsibly.

So what should the leadership style be like? Reflecting on our discussion and thinking about my own experiences, I find that there are two key words: strictness and fairness.

I remember very well a boss of mine who taught me a lot during my time as a young product manager in a multinational company. He stood out for his leadership style, which balanced rigour and respect, taking a serious approach to responsibilities and evaluating results, but also showing empathy and understanding for the human dimension of his colleagues. In this way, he was able to create a workplace where trust was not granted uncritically, but earned and maintained through consistent and transparent behaviour.

I believe that in this context, managers with this vision confer autonomy and responsibility, motivating through example and respect, not through disciplinary power for its own sake, contributing to the creation of a peaceful corporate climate, which is an excellent lever for loyalty.

Returning to my friend, another crucial aspect that emerges from his story concerns the current economic reality, often characterised by reduced margins and competitive pressures. In this scenario, the traditional lever of economic incentives loses strength, while attention to a good working environment becomes more effective.

For managers, a ‘great place to work’ is an environment where people feel valued, where mutual respect is tangible and communication is open. This climate is built through daily care for sincere relationships, authentic recognition and constant attention to human and professional needs.

Empathy: the human capacity that makes the difference

Empathy emerges as a fundamental value, not only as a feeling, but also as a managerial skill to be developed. Knowing how to see situations through the eyes of others allows leaders to anticipate needs, prevent conflicts and support people in difficult situations.

This rational empathy does not mean indulging in irresponsibility, but integrating rigorous assessment with a concrete understanding of the human reality behind every role and every behaviour. It is the ability to balance reason and heart, results and human investment.

My curiosity about him was linked to his relationship with new technologies, which he sees as serving, rather than replacing, humans. This manager's vision is particularly enlightening because he does not reject technology, but reframes it as a tool at the service of humans and organisations, not as an alternative.

The introduction of new digital systems must be accompanied by reflection on their internal and external social impact. Conscious use of technology takes into account people's well-being, avoids the depersonalisation of processes and values human contribution in the most balanced way possible.

The reflections of this ethical manager, the result of long experience, offer important insights for all companies that want to face the challenges of the modern world with a sustainable approach.

Rethinking leadership by focusing on dialogue, fairness and empathy as core values.
Investing in internal communication carried out with competence and awareness to create cohesion.
Focusing on the working environment rather than just financial incentives to encourage loyalty and motivation.
Managing technology in a humane way, avoiding losing sight of the centrality of the individual.
Maintaining rigour and clarity without sacrificing understanding and respect for people.

A call for humane and rational leadership

The message that emerges is clear: the balance between reason and humanity is the way to build resilient and sustainable businesses today. This manager does not offer easy solutions or magic formulas, but advocates leadership based on solid values and consistent behaviour, capable of valuing people without losing sight of economic needs.

In a world where technology moves fast and often dehumanises relationships, choosing to put people first, listening carefully and acting fairly is, as he himself points out, an ethical and strategic choice that can make a difference.
