On-line training and real presence: between the digital revolution and the need for relationships

In recent years, professional training has undergone a profound transformation. What was once a predominantly face-to-face activity, marked by schedules, travel and direct interaction, now increasingly takes place behind a screen. The digital revolution, accelerated by the pandemic, has made possible what until recently seemed marginal: training anywhere, anytime, with accessible tools and on-demand content.

I still remember the first online courses, the transformation of materials and programmes, the anxiety of being boring, of not knowing how to convey concepts. The technological difficulties, the line dropping out, the participants even less familiar than me with the various platforms.

If we could go back and watch some clips from those early days of online training, we would laugh now. Back then, there wasn't much to laugh about.

This evolution has opened up new possibilities, but it has also raised important questions.

What do we lose when training becomes dematerialised? How does the role of the trainer, consultant, or mentor change? And above all: how can we maintain attention, motivation, and depth in a virtual context?
As a professional who has been designing and conducting training and consulting programmes for years, I have closely observed this transition. I have seen companies reorganise entire training plans in digital mode, professionals adapt to new languages and tools, and trainers rethink their role. But I have also seen the risk of training that, while technically flawless, struggles to generate real impact.

Online training has taken off for obvious reasons: flexibility, accessibility, cost reduction, and the ability to reach people far away. It is a method that responds to the needs of an increasingly interconnected and fast-paced world. But it is not neutral. And it is not always effective.

Many courses that until a few years ago were held in classrooms are now offered in webinar, video lesson, and asynchronous platform formats. This has democratised access to training, but it has also made it more difficult to maintain the quality of the experience. Because training is not just about content. It is also about context, relationships and atmosphere. I know that what I am writing immediately places me in the (honorary) category of digital dinosaurs, but that is what I think.

Behind a screen, the attention span decreases. Distractions increase. Emotional involvement decreases. And depth risks giving way to superficiality. It is not a technical problem, but a human one. Our mind needs consistent stimuli, breaks, rhythm, presence. And above all, it needs relationships.

In an online course, the trainer must make an extra effort to capture attention, create connection and facilitate learning. It is not enough to know the content. You need to know how to translate it into digital language, adapt it to screen time, and make it interactive and meaningful.

Here are five tips that, in my experience, help to keep attention alive during an online course:

Design with precision Each module must have a clear structure, defined objectives and a duration compatible with the attention span. Short, dense sessions are better than long, scattered ones.

Alternate languages and stimuli Videos, slides, questions, exercises. Variety helps to keep the mind active and avoid monotony. And every now and then, a good coffee break is needed.

Encourage interaction Where possible, it is essential to create opportunities for participants to discuss and express themselves. This can be done in smaller groups or in a virtual plenary session. I always prepare a few questions and usually start the lesson (as most teachers probably do, where possible) with a brief introduction of each person.
Pay attention to pace and voice Tone, speed, pauses, modulation. Everything contributes to creating an experience that is not only informative but also relational.

Provide opportunities for summary and reflection At the end of each module, it is useful to offer a summary, an open question, an invitation to reflect. This helps to consolidate learning and give meaning to the course.
These measures do not solve all the critical issues, but they help to make online training more effective and more human. Because even behind a screen, it is possible to build relationships. But it takes intention, method and care.

That said, we cannot forget the value of face-to-face training. A course, a mentoring activity, or a face-to-face consultation have a power that digital cannot replicate. Physical presence allows you to pick up on nuances, build trust, and live the experience in its entirety.

In person, the trainer can observe the group, adapt in real time, and create an atmosphere. Participants can feel like they are part of something, not just recipients of content. Mentoring becomes dialogue, not just exchange. Consulting is enriched by context, not just analysis.

And then there is conviviality. Coffee before class. Shared breaks. Informal exchanges. These are moments that do not appear in the programmes, but they make all the difference. Because we are people, not just professionals. Training is also an opportunity to enjoy each other's company, and it is often during these convivial moments that ideas and opinions are exchanged and friendships are formed.

The challenge today is not to choose between online and face-to-face. It is to understand when to use one, when to use the other, and how to integrate them in a coherent way. Blended training, if well designed, can combine the best of both worlds. But it requires expertise, vision and listening skills.

As a trainer and consultant, I believe that every course must start with people. With their needs, their contexts, their goals. Technology is a tool. Powerful, useful, necessary. But it cannot replace relationships. It can amplify them, if used wisely.

In conclusion, online training has opened up new avenues. But it cannot be the only one. Presence remains irreplaceable for certain objectives, certain moments, certain groups. Above all, it remains essential to remind us that professional growth is also human growth.

Training is not just about transmitting knowledge. It is about accompanying. It is about listening. It is about building meaning. And this sometimes requires a screen. But often, it requires a room, a voice, a glance.
